This is a short, easy to read story of life and death, family and community, health and medicine, and systemic, societal problems. The main story line follows my mother's diagnosis of lung cancer. This is not a feel bad book. This is a story about a family caring for their mother at the end of her life. The story dips into past generations to contemporaneous community tragedy, tying in the theme of the personal battle to fight institutionalized processes which should be, but are not for the benefit of the individual's welfare. In a sense, this is a deeply religious book, infused with community tradition. This is a book for anyone, professionals included, who is dealing with or has dealt with care, especially when the end is threatened.My motivation to write this book was my shock at the misuse of drugs, in particular opioids and benzodiazapines, by a medical community that knew nothing about health. Hospice serves as a proxy for an industry that has failed to be the guardians of the public health. At the end of appropriate chapters, I enumerate the issues illustrated. This is a cautionary tale, a case of The Emperor's New Clothes. If you would ask my sisters, and many others, they would say Hospice was wonderful. People want to believe what the professionals are doing is the right thing to do. I saw things differently. May this book keep your eyes open.
